Responsibility – What’s my policy ?

I read an article about a new line of advertising that Liberty Mutual will be making in the US. The ads that focus on the day to day happenings of a suburban American family will cover a broad range of issues – from recession, health, insurance, internet usage by kids, etc. They are aimed at providing insights to the consumers about making holistic changes to their lives.
The tag line of these commercials is “Responsibility – What’s your policy?”

It really made me sit up and think about my take on responsibility.
It’s a truly unique question. Most of the times, I only view my life in single or upto 2-3 dimensions. Health – Career- Personal Life at a fixed point in time… being the most common logical one.
But what about other things and choices and reactions that also have a wide reaching impact on my life …. Like a glass too many of wine, or over reacting to traffic on the way home, fighting with a rickshawalla, getting into an argument with my manager and thinking about it way past bedtime, not going to the gym because I have a lot of work, being too busy to call a friend on their birthday, forgetting to floss ..Or even brushing as if its just a painful thing to get over with. Going for months without picking a paintbrush. Having too much coffee. Letting someone take me for granted, letting someones vision of how my life should be disrupt my world view, not speaking up for myself, gossiping…keeping too much anger inside me, holding a grudge, not removing makeup before going to bed, not telling someone how much they mean to me. Being afraid, not taking enough chances… taking too many chances…

I don’t want to just make a living. I want to make a life…and for that I have to take personal charge. Of myself. For myself. By myself.
If I am not responsible for my actions towards myself. Then who will be?
If I am not responsible for my mental and physical well being. Then who is?

Either I direct and shape what I make out of life. Or I sit back let a set of random people and occurrences do it for me.
Responsibility – What’s my policy?

Hey Kau..i kinda relate this post to my thought on how most / all of us hold and deliver so much accountability and work in our professional lives (for firms who pay us and jobs that will last maybe a few years). What about being half as responsible about our own self? Say about our fitness, health and stuff...

you know what Kau...i think sometimes we take too much responsibility....of making sure that the project deadline doesnt slip...for getting grocery every week....for making sure that we make it to the gym...for saving money...and investing it wisely....i guess we sometimes need to just let go to make sense of our lives...isnt it?

@Nidhi: I completely agree with you on this one.
I feel like we take too much responsibility for things that have so little forebearance on our mental and emotional well being.
There is merit is just letting things be sometimes and listeing to one's body and mind.
