Mon Amie

Long time ago, I read some short essays by Emerson. One of them about Friendship. And he wrote something that just passed my fleeting eye..much like the daffodils ..but today ..many years after that day - the words came alive for me. I now know what he meant when he said that "Friendship was essential so that one may enjoy solitude".
Its one of those in between days in Mumbai. The sky is pregnant with dark grey clouds that seem to be hovering in silence over the metropolis. And the streets far below are quiet with expectation of the storm to come. And I am enjoying another night in my room listening to the rustling of the trees outside, faint scent of mogra in the air, the silver glow from my laptop lightening up my otherwise sober room , the door blocking out the sound of TV from the outside. And here in this cocoon, while I get comfortably numb with floyd - I smile as I think of my closest friend in the whole world.
Now on a journey of her own. In a different continent, meeting different people, making new friends that I will only hear and read about but never meet. On her quest to unlearn the things that we did with so much joy and familiarity not too long ago and learn how to navigate through the many winding roads in her new old town. And my insides are filled with warmth. I can see her wonder and her frustration and the shake of her head. And it makes me smile.
The truth is - that infact its very simple. In matters of the heart, when bonds are fragile and on a rocky foundation mostly selfish in nature - no matter how much you try, they always shatter. Some loudly, others quietly. But surely. And yet again, at other times when the tug that pulls your heart when you think of someone is true and is as simple as breathing - like thinking of someone when you smell freshly brewed coffee and wish that it was them you were sharing it with, when bonds are like that - they are like a boy scouts knot. No matter how hard you try - you just cant break them.

And even though for the longest time you feel that you have altered the course of that relationship, one day you realise that infact - it is that friendship which has altered yours.
May you live a thousand years and I less one - that I may never know this world without you.
Thank God I have enough.

Hi,

I was made aware of your blog recently. Most interesting and engaging.

I could not post a comment for 'Downpour'. I remembered a line by Osho which i thought was interesting - "Be realistic, Plan for a Miracle"
