It was V day.August 1945.
The war had been won and John Lennon had his wish come true and a new day had just begun.
The japanese were on their way home and for the allies it was a homecoming like never before.
Times Square.
A jubliant sailor embraces a passing nurse and locks lips in one of the most prolific potraits of all time.
And the moment was captured.
For me - I saw this poster for the first time in a special edition of the Time Magazine in my teens.
The drama of the moment, the kiss, the celebration, the hushed end of a war, new beginnings ..sealed with a kiss
And I was awe struck. I wanted to go to New York and ofcourse be kissed by my own sailor.
I have come across this picture many times since - it always brings a smile to my face.
Today, for the first time a newspaper article put a name to the face in this snapshot.
Edit Shain - The nurse in the photo - died at the age of 92.
RIP Edith.
Thank you for one of my favorite print visuals of all time.
